Products Made Possible by Natural Gas & Oil
To create the quality of life we enjoy, there is one common denominator – natural gas and oil. It may not always be obvious where or how, but Ohio-made energy is essential to life.
FUEL & TRANSPORTATION
Travel, commerce, and farming wouldn’t be possible without natural gas and oil. Refined petroleum fuels our personal vehicles, planes, public transportation, farming equipment, and our delivery vehicles. It also helps make our rubber tires, seats, plastic framing, and much more.
SCHOOL & WORK
Almost every product in our classrooms and offices such as desks, chairs, computers, printers, ink, pens, pencils, crayons, backpacks, calculators, posters, and more are all made possible thanks to petroleum.
ELECTRICITY
Seven out of ten Ohioans heat their home with natural gas, which provides 43% of the state’s electricity generation – up from just 3% a decade ago.
FOOD & APPLIANCES
Natural gas and oil play a large role in the way we grow, transport, and cook our foods. Fertilizer, herbicides, farming equipment, transportation, packaging, refrigeration, grills, ovens, and microwaves, to name a few, all include components made from gas and oil.
TECHNOLOGY
Technology, such as computers, televisions, cell phones, tablets, and smart watches are essential to our daily lives and include many plastic components. Additionally, the screens are made possible thanks to carbon black – a petroleum product.
MEDICAL
Modern-day medical equipment would not be possible without natural gas and oil. Our ambulances, IV bags, stretchers, artificial hearts and limbs, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, medicines, and much more are all made possible thanks to refined petroleum.
SPORTS/RECREATION
Petroleum is a critical component of baseballs, footballs, soccer balls, tennis rackets, fishing poles, cleats, pads, helmets, ice skates, and many more products that make our sports and activities possible.
ENTERTAINMENT/HOBBIES
From snorkel equipment to video games, from puzzles to binoculars, and from paint to skateboard wheels – everything that entertains us relies on natural gas and oil.
TEXTILES
Common fabrics and textiles such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and spandex are petroleum-based. Common uses of these textiles include clothing, swimsuits, bedding, curtains, upholstery, and more.
CONSTRUCTION
Materials used for construction and home improvement are often derived from natural gas and oil. These include, but are not limited to, paint and paint rollers, tools, asphalt, and roofing shingles, as well as safety equipment such as safety glasses, traffic cones, protective gloves, and hard hats.
