Watkins Teachers Awarded Augmented Reality Sandbox by Oil, Gas Energy Education Program

NEWARK ADVOCATE. The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program (OOGEEP) awarded Watkins Intermediate School math and science teacher Michele Hamilton an augmented reality sand table on Sept. 21. The new display will allow students to explore STEM skills while learning about energy, earth science, geology and topography.

“I have searched high and low for ways to incorporate technology and hands-on learning into my classroom and have encouraged others to do the same,” wrote Hamilton in her essay applying for the sandbox. “Who wouldn’t want to spend hours immersed in the augmented reality world? The minute I saw this table, my mind started making calculations on how I could acquire one of these for my classroom and building.”

On Sept. 21 the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program delivered an augmented reality sand table to Watkins Intermediate School math and science teacher Michele Hamilton. The new display, awarded to Hamilton by the education program, will allow students to explore STEM skills while learning about energy, earth science, geology and topography.

OOGEEP, a non-profit statewide education and public outreach program, asked all teachers applying for this technology to write a short essay, create a lesson plan and schedule a classroom presentation. In Hamilton’s lesson plan she outlined group activities using the sandbox including having students create their own landforms and create maps. OOGEEP was impressed by Hamilton’s passion for her students and her motivation to improve their knowledge and skills.
