Ohio Teachers Take Lessons About Ohio’s Natural Gas and Oil Industry Back to the Classroom
The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program provided education and classroom materials to over 50 Ohio teachers
Granville, OH - Teachers from across Ohio joined the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program (OOGEEP) this summer to learn more about Ohio’s natural gas and oil industry, and the careers that relate to their classroom teaching.“This was such an informative experience and provided me with so many opportunities to relate real world careers in the natural gas and oil industry back to the teaching I do in the classroom,” said Tami Golliday, a teacher at Bexley High School. “I’m thankful to the natural gas and oil producers who fund programs like this one.”The teachers attended a series of STEM and geology workshops put on by OOGEEP intended to provide educators with factual knowledge about the natural gas and oil industry, along with the history and science behind it, to take back to their classrooms.After the workshops, teachers joined OOGEEP for field trips to a producing oil well, an industry supplier, Orton Geological Museum on Ohio State’s campus, the statehouse, and Caesar Creek State Park to learn more about the industry and explore Ohio’s unique geological features.“Our teacher workshops and the associated field trips are a great opportunity to show educators the science behind natural gas and oil and the opportunities that exist in this industry,” said George Brown, Executive Director of OOGEEP. “The natural gas and oil industry provides jobs to over 200,000 Ohioans and offers careers for everyone from high school graduates to those with PhD’s.”OOGEEP offers these programs to Ohio teachers annually and provides them with curriculums, educational materials and career connections to take back to their classrooms. The program is designed to help teachers bring science alive by relating the concepts to real life. To date over 3,200 teachers have participated in the program representing nearly 1,600 schools in all 88 Ohio counties.
