Opinion: Ohio A Major Player in Energy

Lima News. October is a month to celebrate Halloween, carve pumpkins and learn more about Ohio’s energy sources. It is after all energy awareness month.Did you know that Ohio is a leader in energy production? We produce 2.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 27 million barrels of crude oil every year. Our state’s four refineries, like the Cenovus refinery here in Lima, turn a lot of that production into various petrochemicals used in the making of things like asphalt and plastic. We also produce electricity using the natural gas produced in Ohio. In 2020, 43% of the state’s electricity production came from natural gas-fired power plants, up from less than 2% in 2008. The remarkable increase in the use of natural gas to generate electricity has even led to a significant decline in CO2 emissions for the state’s electric generation sector. Between 2005 and 2015, the sector saw a 50 million metric ton decrease in carbon emissions thanks to their increased use of natural gas.Energy awareness month provides a great opportunity for all of us to reflect on the vital role the natural gas and oil industry plays in providing us the essential Ohio energy we use daily.George Brown,Executive DirectorThe Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education ProgramClick here to view the original article.
