Opinion: Natural Gas Playing Growing Role in Heating Ohio Homes

Columbus Dispatch. Have you had to turn on your home’s heat yet? If not, you will be soon and chances are you’ll be using natural gas to do it. Where does that natural gas come from though? October is energy awareness month, making now the perfect time to learn.Two-thirds of Ohio homes use natural gas for heating, much of which is produced right here in Ohio. Our state produces 2.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas annually.To put that in perspective, we can heat 28.1 million homes for the winter with Ohio produced natural gas.Maybe you’re part of the 25% of Ohioans who rely on electric heaters to warm their homes. You likely still rely on natural gas for heat.A full 43% of Ohio’s electricity production in 2020 came from natural gas-fired power plants, up from less than 2% in 2008.
